Service Description

Swedish massage is a therapeutic massage that manipulates muscles and joints, designed to invigorate the body by stimulating the circulation, and promoting relaxation. The massage includes a neck, back and shoulder massage using a combination of movements and techniques such as: 1. Effleurage These are the gliding and sliding movements that usually cover the different areas of the body. The movements are usually long strokes that change from firm to light pressure and can be done using the palm of the hand or the fingertips and thumbs. The knots and tension in the muscles tend to be broken down using this technique. 2. Petrissage These are the kneading movements of the muscles of the body. It is deeper massage and penetration. The thumbs and knuckles of the fingers are used to do kneading and picking up of the muscles of the body. This movement prepares the muscles for the next movement. 3. Tapotement or Rhythmic Tapping This consists of rhythmic tapping which include movements like beating cupping and hacking. This helps to loosen and relax the muscles being manipulated. It also helps them to be energized and ready for the next massage movement. 4. Friction This movement brings relaxation to the muscles. The palms of the hands are rubbed together in a wringing motion up and down the muscle causing erythema on the skin. This movement causes the skin of the person to be warmed up producing heat which is erythema - reddening of the skin. This technique prepares the muscles by being warmed up for the next deeper massage movement. 5. Vibration or shaking This technique helps loosen up and relax the muscles by shaking up the muscle. The heel of the hand, sides of the hand and any other part of the hand can be used to shake up the muscles of the person. Vibrations are basically movements that vibrate the body. Swedish massage is used to improve the circulation in the body, to ease muscle tension, to promote muscle relaxation and flexibility and it helps get rid of the waste products. The Swedish massage can be done slowly and gently or can be done fast and more vigorously depending on the client’s specific needs and what the therapist is trying to achieve.
